A phone plays a Short above a 3 minute timeline, with the 15 to 30 second stretch lit in blue

A YouTube Short can run up to 3 minutes, and for a local business most winning formats run 15 to 30 seconds. Of the 107 formats we built from 1,532 winning Shorts in 15 local business niches, 72 top out at 30 seconds or less and 101 at 40 seconds or less, so start at 15 to 30 seconds and go longer only when every extra second adds a step, a fact or a result.

This guide gives you YouTube's current limits, the lengths that win in local business niches, a length for each kind of format and three scripts you can time with your phone.

Know YouTube's limits before you plan

YouTube raised the Short limit from 60 seconds to 3 minutes on October 15, 2024, for videos that are square or taller (YouTube blog). Its upload page still lists the same two rules today: up to 3 minutes, square or vertical (YouTube Help). A few more rules change how you should use those 3 minutes:

Rule What it means for your length
Square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes count as Shorts You can post a 2 minute tutorial as a Short
Videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 stay long-form Your old 90 second uploads did not turn into Shorts
A Short over 1 minute with an active copyright claim gets blocked worldwide Past 60 seconds, use only audio you own or library tracks
Most library songs play for up to 90 seconds in a 3 minute Short, some only 60 or 30 Check the track's limit before you plan a long Short to music
Since March 31, 2025, a view counts each time a Short starts or replays A short loop that people rewatch adds views; engaged views show who stayed

The copyright and music rules come from YouTube's page on three-minute Shorts, and the view rule from its guide to creating Shorts. To see how those views turn into money, read how YouTube Shorts monetization works.

See the lengths that win in local business niches

In October 2026 we read 35,066 Shorts from the top channels of 15 local business niches and kept the 1,532 that got 3x or more the median views of their own channel. We grouped those winners into 107 formats, and every format plan carries a length range for its beats. Here is where those ranges end:

Format plan ends at Formats Share
20 seconds or less 24 22%
21 to 30 seconds 48 45%
31 to 40 seconds 29 27%
41 to 60 seconds 6 6%

The most common plans run 15 to 25 seconds (24 formats) and 15 to 30 seconds (20 formats). No format in any of the 15 niches needs the full 3 minutes.

Two niches sit at the edges. The shortest plans start at 8 seconds: one funny caption over a single looping clip for photographers, and one funny truth about the job, acted out, for real estate agents. The longest belong to yoga instructors, where a pose name breakdown runs 30 to 60 seconds because the teacher demos the pose cue by cue. Open your own niche, for example photographers or real estate agents, to see the length of each winning format next to the real Shorts behind it.

Match your length to your format

Pick the length from what the Short has to show, then cut everything else.

Length Fits Beats
8 to 15 seconds A caption joke, one before and after, a price reveal One hook, one payoff, a clean loop back to the start
15 to 30 seconds Most formats: tips, transformations, behind the scenes Hook in 0 to 2 seconds, proof, next step in the last 3 seconds
30 to 60 seconds Step by step: a pose breakdown, a 3 step routine, a quick tutorial Hook, one beat per step, a recap, the next step
60 seconds to 3 minutes A full walkthrough or a story with a result at the end Hook, chapters every 15 to 20 seconds, the result, the next step

Whatever the length, change the picture or the text before the third second. Among the winners we timed, the median first cut came at 2.5 seconds, and the ones that talk said their first word at a median of 0.1 seconds. Our guide to what makes a YouTube Short go viral breaks those openings down.

Plan a 15, 30 or 60 second Short

Time each script out loud with your phone's stopwatch before you film or build it.

15 seconds, a car detailer's before and after. 0 to 2 s: the stained seat, caption "3 years of coffee". 2 to 12 s: three cuts of the cleaning. 12 to 15 s: the clean seat, caption "Book on our site". End on a frame that matches the first one, so the loop feels seamless.

30 seconds, a dentist's myth check. 0 to 2 s: the question on a plain card, "Does whitening hurt your teeth?". 2 to 24 s: the answer in three short lines, one per shot. 24 to 30 s: the clinic, the street and "Book a check-up".

60 seconds, a yoga teacher's pose breakdown. 0 to 3 s: the finished pose and its name. 3 to 48 s: four steps, about 11 seconds each, one cue per step. 48 to 56 s: the pose again from the side. 56 to 60 s: the class times.

If a script runs long, cut the intro first. Your name, your logo and "Hey guys" can all wait for the last 3 seconds.

Test two lengths on your own channel

Your channel tells you more than any average. Post the same format at two lengths in the same week, for example a 15 second and a 30 second version of one before and after. After 7 days, compare each with your channel's median views, the same way we pick winners. Then check engaged views in YouTube Analytics, since a quick loop can collect replays that a longer Short earns with watch time.

Keep the winner's length for that format, and run the test again when you add a new format. Our 12 YouTube Shorts ideas for small businesses give you formats to test.

Keep your text where viewers can read it

A perfect length fails when buttons cover your caption. Google's vertical safe zone for YouTube video ads keeps text 288 pixels from the top and 672 pixels from the bottom of a 1080 by 1920 frame. Drop a frame into our free Shorts safe zone checker and it shows you which caption or logo crosses an edge, and by how many pixels.

You might also ask

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to 3 minutes. Since October 15, 2024, YouTube counts a square or vertical video of up to 3 minutes as a Short.

What is the best length for a YouTube Short for a local business?

Plan 15 to 30 seconds for most formats. Of the 107 formats we built from 1,532 winning Shorts in 15 local business niches, 72 top out at 30 seconds or less and 101 at 40 seconds or less.

Is a 60 second Short too long?

Only when the extra seconds repeat what the viewer already saw. Step by step formats, like a yoga pose breakdown, earn 30 to 60 seconds. A before and after or a price reveal rarely needs more than 20.

Do longer Shorts get more views?

Length alone earns nothing. Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a view each time a Short starts to play or replays, so a short loop that people replay can collect views fast. Check engaged views to see who kept watching.
